Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus recently conducted a Yoga session for students of classes 1 and 2 on Friday 15 March 2024.

The session began with the traditional Namaskara, followed by a series of standing poses such as Tadasana and Trikonasana. Students then transitioned to sitting poses like Bhujangasana and Cobra Pose. The session ended with Pranayama exercises and guided meditation, promoting relaxation and mental well-being.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organized an Inter-House Chart Making Competition on ‘Indian Authors Writing in English’ for the students of Classes 3 to 8 on Thursday, 14 March 2024.

The classrooms were abuzz with activity as students sketched, painted and made collages on the works by renowned Indian authors and poets such as Rabindranath Tagore, Anita Desai, Ruskin Bond, Sudha Murty, Toru Dutt, Vikram Seth, Jhumpa Lahiri and Nissim Ezekiel.

The competition not only exhibited the students’ artistic talents, but also highlighted the importance of Literature in shaping cultural identity and fostering a sense of pride in India’s literary heritage.

The session covered a diverse range of topics including the fascinating story of Gravity and Gravitational force, Newton’s laws, and the concepts of Curvature of Spacetime, Magnetic Buoyancy, Sunspots, and Solar Magnetism. This interactive session provided students with valuable insights into fundamental principles of Physics.

Description:

Garden High School IISER KOLKATA campus organized an engaging activity entitled”Fun with Science” for the students of classes 6 to 8 on Thursday,14 March,2024.

The event aimed to foster a love for science through hands-on and interactive learning experiences.One of the highlights of the event was the creation of a working model of the respiratory system.Students enthusiastically participated in constructing the model,gaining a deeper understanding of how the human respiratory system functions. Another interesting activity was the making of a DNA molecule using paper. Students learned about the structure of DNA and its signifirespiEgg experiment, Elephant toothpaste. Students had the opportunity to peer into the microscopic world as they examined various species under the microscope.

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organized a session on craft making, ‘Best out of Waste’ for the students of Classes 3-5 on Thursday, 14 March 2024.

The activity aimed to promote awareness of the need to recycle and reuse materials we use in daily life. Cardboard boxes, newspapers and plastic bottles found new life as photo frames, pencil stands and flower vases. The classrooms transformed into mini-workshops with the delightful creations of the participants.

The event instilled a valuable lesson in sustainability among the young minds.

Description:

Garden High School IISER KOLKATA campus organized an exciting activity, ‘Confident Chefs’ centered around ‘Cooking without fire’ for the students of classes Nursery I to 5 on Wednesday 13 March,2024. Our young chefs prepared healthy and yummy lip-smacking items like Sizzling Sweetcorns, Tangy Papri Chaat, yummy Dahi Phuchkas, Monaco Canapes using quick and easy recipes. Children participated with zeal and enthusiasm as they made these nutritious and delectable delicacies. The event aimed at fostering creativity, teamwork and culinary skills among the young participants.

Art Workshop on "The Cave Paintings of India: Enchanting Ajanta"

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus, in collaboration with Satikanta Guha Centre for Culture and Learning, hosted an Art Workshop on ‘The Cave Paintings of India’. It was organised for the students of Classes 6 to 8. The resource person was Dr.Mousumi Ghosh, Guest Lecturer of the Rabindra Bharati University and the University of Kalyani. The workshop focused on the frescoes of Ajanta Caves which evolved during the 2nd century BC to 6th century AD.

Dr. Ghosh began the session with an audio visual presentation on the enchanting cave paintings of the Ajanta Cave. She also discussed the processes involved that time while making the colours from the minerals available there by blending them with the animal fat as a binder. The students then were asked to improvise on the samples of replica of the ancient Buddhist cave paintings, murals and frescoes. They were also educated on the modern techniques of conservation and restoration of the ancient art of these caves.

The session was enriching and informative. The students found the details of history fascinating, prompting them to actively participate in this engaging and interactive session.

Description:

The Department of Chemical Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata organized an interactive session with the students for Classes 6 and 9 at the Ashima Chatterjee Hall, IISER Kolkata. Associate Professor Pradip K. Tarafdar and Associate Professor Supratim Banerjee conducted discussions on the subjects ‘Studying Science: Why and What are its Benefits?’ and ‘Chemistry: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’ respectively. Prof. Tarafdar explained the role of chemical reactions in culinary art, thus providing valuable insights into the relevance and impact of science, particularly Chemistry, in our daily lives. Prof. Banerjee educated the pupils on some common chemicals, their uses, benefits and numerous side-effects. He explained that being continuously surrounded by chemicals has eventually led to a distaste for it which is now termed as “Chemophobia”. The sessions helped us understand how scientists are attempting to bring about a change with the help of Chemistry.

The sessions proved to be enlightening for the students and stirred their interest to delve into the world of science.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organized a fun- filled Inter-House chart making competition for the students of Classes 3 to 5 on Tuesday, 12 March 2024.

In order to encourage teamwork the students were divided into two groups, Group A comprising Cedar and Palm House, and Group B comprising Oak and Chinar House. The objective behind the competition was to encourage the artistic flair of the students and to gauge their technical know- how. The classrooms were transformed into a canvas of blossoming ideas, as the students meticulously crafted their charts on topics such as ‘Shortcut Keys for MAC’ and ‘Shortcut Keys for Windows’. The event emphasized the importance of art and technology towards a child’s holistic development.

The school’s sports field buzzed with excitement, as the young athletes showcased their skills. After the enthralling Finals, Oak House emerged as the winner of the tournament. The runners- up, Chinar House displayed great determination and resilience. The third place was taken by Cedar House. Palm House too, displayed commendable sportsmanship.

The school’s sports field buzzed with excitement and anticipation, as the budding athletes showcased their skills. After a gripping Final, Cedar House emerged as the winner of the tournament. The runners-up, Palm House displayed commendable sportsmanship.

In the match for the third place, Oak House emerged as the winner, whereas Chinar House displayed great determination and resilience.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus in collaboration with Satikanta Guha Centre for Culture and Learning organized a workshop on Graphology for both parents and teachers on Friday, 8 March 2024. Mr Avirup Mitra and Ms Saswati Mukherjee, both professionally trained graphologists, were the Resource Persons for the workshop.

The aim of the workshop was to identify the traits of a student through Graphology, and to help us understand students’ psychology. Mr Mitra and Ms Mukherjee pointed out the importance of understanding the various aspects of a student’s personality from their handwriting. The session proved to be interactive and an enriching experience for all.

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus in collaboration with Satikanta Guha Centre for Culture and Learning held the inaugural meeting of its Philately Club on Thursday, 7 March 2024.

The special occasion was marked by the presence of Mr. Debansu Saha, LSG Postal Assistant at India Post. He was accompanied by Mr. Biswajit Dutta- Office Assistant in the Philately Branch of India Post, Mr. Biswajit Biswas – Marketing Executive at India Post, and Mr Soutan Nandi- Marketing Executive (Philately) at India Post.

The meeting was attended by the Principal, Mrs Ratna Biswas, the 12 student members from classes 6 to 8 and the guiding teachers, Mrs Sharmila Kundu (Chairperson), Mrs Sanchita Chakraborty (Secretary) and Ms Suchismita Sen (Treasurer).

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organized its inaugural Staff Football Tournament with a staff football match on Thursday 29 February 2024.

The members of the service staff of the school participated in this thrilling display of skill and teamwork. They were divided into two teams- Team Tiger in neon green and Team Lion in neon orange. Team Lion won the match 2-1 and their captain Lakshman Bhowmik won the title of the Best Player of the Match.

The session on “The Amazing Chemistry behind Biryani” led by Dr. Subhajit Bandyopadhyay captivated the young minds.

The Principal, Mrs Ratna Biswas, unfurled the National Flag while the students of classes 8 and 9 stood at attention, along with the teachers and the staff members of the school.This was followed by the singing of the National Anthem and a few presentations by the students.

A speech, by the students of class 9, emphasized the significance of Republic Day and the school choir enchanted everyone with patriotic songs. Furthermore, there were enthralling dance performances that portrayed the cultural diversity and the democratic heritage of the country.

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organized a series of activities for its students under the seventh edition of Programme Pariksha Pe Charcha 2024. These activities began on, Friday, 12 January 2024, that was celebrated as National Youth Day, and continued till Tuesday, 23 January 2024, which was the birthday of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

During this period, talks were given at the school assembly highlighting the significance of the National Youth Day. The school choir presented a musical tribute to Swami Vivekananda. A poster making competition on the topic of ‘National Youth Day’ was also organized where the students of classes 3 to 9 displayed their creativity and skills.

The students also participated in an awareness campaign in the form of a short marathon around the campus of the school to promote the importance of sports and fitness in students. They were also engaged in yoga-cum-meditation sessions to help them channelize their energy in a positive direction.

These activities served as a medium for holistic development, promoting physical fitness, creativity, and a positive mindset among the students.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organized an enriching Nature Study for students from Nursery I to Class 2. The initiative aimed to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world among the young learners.

Under the guidance of their teachers, the children explored various elements of nature, including vegetables, flowers, and different types of leaves. The immersive experience extended to observing butterflies, birds, and other components of the environment. The children explored and learned about the different vegetables like carrots and beetroots,that are grown in the school’s vegetable garden.

Students were actively engaged in conversations about nurturing the environment, gaining insights into the responsibilities involved in fostering a green and sustainable ecosystem. The outing not only provided a hands-on experience for the students but also instilled a sense of environmental awareness and responsibility..

The students of class 8 and 9 of Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus had the privilege of interacting with Professor Samir Kumar Brahmachari, the esteemed Academy Professor of the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research and Chief Mentor of Open Source Drug Discovery, on Friday,12 January 2024.

Prof. Brahmachari, a former Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, was accompanied by Dr Vani Brahmachari, Professor of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Center for Biomedical Research, University of Delhi, and Dr Rituparna Sinha Roy, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences (DBS), Chemical Sciences (DCS), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research.

Prof. Brahmachari engaged the students in a mental mathematical exercise and enlightened the students about the changes brought about by artificial intelligence, underlining the importance of adapting and acquiring skills relevant to the current technological era. He also emphasized the significance of peer teaching as a means of collaborative learning, fostering an environment where students actively contribute to each other’s education.

The esteemed guests regaled the students with awe- inspiring anecdotes and inspired them to embrace a holistic approach to education, incorporating both traditional and contemporary learning methodologies.

Prof.Brahmachari’s insights left an indelible mark on the students, encouraging them to explore the dynamic intersection of technology and education.

Description:

Students of class 9 of Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus went on a lab visit to the Department of Biological Science, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata Campus, on Wednesday, 10 January 2024.

Accompanied by their school teachers, Ms Srabanti Maji Mandal and Ms Gargee Sarkar, the students were engaged in a lively discussion on cell structure, under the guidance of Dr Anuradha Bhat. Following this they performed a hands-on experiment wherein they observed cheek cells under microscopes. Dr Debabrata Sutradhar and Mr Tamal Ghosh provided valuable assistance throughout the experiment. Dr Sutradhar also offered the students an informative tour of the lab. The students gained firsthand knowledge of advanced scientific instruments, including the spectrophotometer, autoclave machine, vortex mixer, and the laminar airflow room for bacterial culture. This immersive experience not only enhanced their understanding of biology but also sparked a curiosity for scientific exploration.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus held its Annual Sports Meet on Friday, 22 December, 2023. The events for the day began with the March Past. This was followed by the flag hoisting ceremony where the Principal, Mrs. Ratna Biswas declared the Sports Meet open. The events of the day included Novelty Races by students of classes Nursery I to class 2. The students of classes 3 to 12 also participated in a variety of track and field events.

Colourful performances including Aerobic Drill activities, Human Pyramid formations and a Karate display were presented by the students of classes 3 to 9. Teachers and Service Staff members of the school also showcased their spirit of sportsmanship by participating in races that kept the viewers cheering loud.

The track events were followed by the declaration of the results. Chinar House claimed the House Championship Trophy, while Palm House earned the Trophy for the Best March Past. The day ended on a sweet note as the students were pleasantly surprised with a special visit by Santa Claus. The day which began as a celebration of teamwork and sportsmanship, concluded on a festive note.

The wide range of subjects, including STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Reasoning and Aptitude, and the International Talent Hunt, provided a platform for students to showcase their multidisciplinary skills.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus celebrated the birth anniversary of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati on Monday, 11 December 2023 with a special assembly. The assembly paid tribute to the contributions of Mahakavi. Poems in Bengali and Hindi were recited by the students and a display board was put up to commemorate this day.

The day also marked the end of the 75 days of Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav that started from 28 November 2023. To celebrate this eleven-week long Utsav, the school organised several activities.

The students participated in a painting competition highlighting the ethnic culture of India. A musical performance on songs in Sanskrit, Bengali and English was also put up by them. They also performed dramas in both Bengali and Hindi to demonstrate the essential beauty of these languages.

Garden High School IISER KOLKATA campus participated in the Regional Science Exhibition held at G.D Goenka Public school, Dakhineshwar. On Friday 1 December 2023 and Saturday 2 December 2023.A total of 45 schools actively participated in the enlightening exhibition. Students from classes 6-8 engaged in projects centered around freshwater conservation, preservation and their uses in regions facing water shortages. Students from 9-11 presented projects on the application of hydrogel to arrest water wastage. The projects were evaluated by a panel of judges, well-versed in the fields of Science, Technology and Environmental Conservation. The event served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange but also fostered a spirit of innovation and collaboration among students.

The school presented two projects, one on the removal of arsenic from water, and the other was on purification of drinking water. Both the projects highlighted their cost effectiveness and applicability in domestic purposes.

Description:

A two-day Capacity Building Workshop on Induction Training (Guru Dakshata) was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, Centre of Excellence, Bhubaneswar, at Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus on Friday, 24 November 2023 and Saturday, 25 November 2023.

41 educators from different CBSE- affiliated schools attended this workshop. There were extensive discussions and hands-on group activities such as, role-play, and poster presentations. The honourable resource persons for the programme were Dr. Ramesh Kumar Agarwal, Vice- Principal of Krishnagar Public School, Krishnagar and Mr Debasish Goswami, the Senior Teachers’ Coordinator of Satish Chandra Memorial School, Chakdah. They provided valuable insights to the participants through the workshop.

Description:

The students of class 2 of Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus, took part in a plantation drive where each of them planted a seed in recycled containers in their homes. The students were inspired by a chapter in their Hindi textbooks, about the importance of plants and afforestation. The students tended to the new saplings and watered them regularly. They also brought the saplings to class and spoke about them.

This activity not only helped students become environmentally aware but also inculcated core values like patience and kindness in them.

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus participated in the LogIQids Mental Aptitude Olympiad 23-24 on Wednesday, 22 November 2023.

Over 200 students across classes 1 to 9 appeared for this examination. This Olympiad, designed to assess and enhance students’ mental aptitude, was a platform for young minds to showcase their problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities.

In addition to the marks scored in the Olympiad, 12 additional marks will be given to every student who completed at least 20 LogIQids Worksheets from their registered account before the test. This initiative aims to recognize and reward students’ proactive efforts in honing their mental aptitude skills beyond the classroom setting.

Simultaneously, the school also participated in the Writing Wizards Handwriting Competition 2023, where 41 enthusiastic students from classes 1 and 2 exhibited their penmanship skills. The workshop saw the active participation of the students of classes VIII and IX of Garden High School IISER KOLKATA campus along with 80 teachers of Kendriya Vidyalaya and other central schools. Learning units comprised of two topics, namely Pinhole camera (for the students of class VIII) and Biodiversity (for the students of class IX).These units are in line with the NCERT curriculum and helped in better concept building in students.

The students of Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus celebrated National Unity Day on Tuesday, 31 October 2023 with a series of activities. A special assembly was held to pay tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. A speech commemorating his life and achievements was delivered by a student of class 10 in this assembly.

The students also participated in a painting and poster making event.

These posters were displayed by the students from 9, 10 and 12 in a Unity Run, covering the IISER Campus and its neighbouring market. The run culminated with a Unity pledge that was read by the students and the teachers of the school.

This event acted as a reminder for the students, of the enduring importance of unity in our diverse society.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organized the Pre-Puja Celebration on Tuesday, 17 October 2023, to showcase the spirit of Durga Puja. The program was put up by the students of Nursery I to Class 4 under the guidance of their teachers. A variety of vibrant performances were presented by the young students – a fashion parade by the students of Nursery I, songs and poems in multiple languages by the students of Nursery II and Preparatory, a dance performance by the students of Classes II and III, and a play on environmental awareness by the students of Class I. Finally, the students of Class IV (A and B) enacted an adaptation of the epic “Ramayana”. In the end, the students of Classes 5 and 6 offered a special surprise by gifting handmade greeting cards to the Principal, and the non-teaching staff of the school. Every performance was worthily applauded by the audience, comprising of the students of classes Nursery 1 to 12.

Students from classes V to X actively participated in it. The themes for the painting as was given by the organizers were, ‘Life – Lifestyle for Environment’ and ‘We are pro planet people’. The competition not only showcased the artistic talent of the students but also instilled a sense of environmental consciousness among the participants.

Students of classes 10 and 12 of Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus participated in a Science Programme, “Chemistry for School Students”, on Wednesday, 11 October 2023. This half-day programme was organized by the Department of Chemical Sciences of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata.

Professor Debasish Haldar, FRSC from IISER spearheaded the event. The students were engaged in discussions led by Professor Swadhin Mondal on topics like Catalytic Reactions, Carbon Capture, and Recycling. Professor Venkatraman Mahalingam delved into the molecular structure and arrangement of Diamond, Graphite, and Graphene in relation to Nanoparticles. Professor Sayam Sengupta provided insights on Cryogenics and the utilization of Oxygen as a fuel. The students also had the opportunity to explore the research labs for X-ray Diffraction and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, gaining first-hand knowledge about the equipment.

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organized a Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Workshop for the parents of the students of Nursery I and Nursery II on Friday, 6 October 2023. The objective of this workshop was to foster active parental involvement in the teaching learning process and to promote the vision of ‘Janbhagidari’ (public participation) in school curriculum.

Twenty-four parents took part in this workshop, under the guidance of Ms. Deepannita Banerjee, the class teacher of Class 1, and Ms. Ekata Chakraborty, the class teacher of Class 2, of the school. The workshop featured a series of hands-on activities, such as chart making, and role play, designed to promote and support the theme of “Ensuring Foundation Literacy and Numeracy (FLN)”. An exhibition showcasing the Teaching Learning Materials employed by the teachers was also arranged for the participants to explore.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organized a Mental Health Orientation Programme for the students of classes 7- 9 on Friday, 6 October 2023. This programme was conducted in collaboration with the Indian institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata, in observance of the Mental Health Week.

Facilitating this program were Mr. Neeraj Mishra and Mr. Anirban Gupta, both Clinical Psychologists and team members of the ‘Mind Care and Wellness Centre’ of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata. They addressed the origins of stress among students, its ramifications, and provided coping mechanisms. Engaging activities such as games and short films ensured the students’ active participation throughout the event.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organized an Inter-House Football Tournament on the school premises from 4 October to 6 October, 2023. Cedar House emerged as the victors, while Palm House secured the second position. Oak House and Chinar House secured third and fourth place, respectively. The matches were officiated by the school’s Physical Education teacher, Mr. Tarun Kr Sarkar, and the players received guidance from the Housemasters and Housemistresses: Ms. Sanchita Chakraborty (Palm House), Mr. Rahool Sarkar (Chinar House), Ms. Deepannita Banerjee (Oak House), and Mr. Subinoy Das (Cedar House). Students from classes 3 to 12 witnessed the final matches on Friday, 6 October, 2023. Their spirited cheers provided a significant boost to the motivation of the players.

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus congratulates the winners of the Tata Building India Essay Writing Competition that was held within the school on Thursday, 17 August 2023. This competition had two categories- junior and senior. For each category, three winners were selected.

The winners of the junior category are Sayandip Mandal (First), Arisha Hasan Shirazee (First Runner up), and Adrita Pal (Second Runner up).

The winners of the senior category are Anvita Bhaumik (First), Asmi Roy (First Runner up) and Debosneesh Haldar (Second Runner up).

Description:

The students of class 6 of Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus went on a nature walk to observe butterflies on Saturday, 30 September, 2023. This educational outing was conducted in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata.

The students were accompanied by their teachers, Ms. Srabanti Maji Mandal and Ms. Aishwarya Saha, and student volunteers from IISER, Kolkata. The group explored the lush premises of IISER campus and were able to witness a diverse array of butterflies in a relatively short time frame. In just half an hour, the students identified ten distinct butterfly species and three varieties of dragonflies.

172 students across classes 5 to 10 took this offline test within the school campus. The test, designed to assess and enhance students’ aptitude in various subjects, provided a valuable opportunity for them to gauge their knowledge and skills.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus hosted an interactive session with ALLEN Career Institute, Kolkata, for students in grades 8-10 on Tuesday, 26 September, 2023.

The Kolkata branch of the institute sent three representatives to the school campus who served as session facilitators. Mr. Ankit Guha, a faculty member of ALLEN Career Institute, took on the role of speaker. He engaged with the students, addressing their everyday challenges such as academic stress, peer pressure, time management, and technological distractions. Mr. Guha enlightened the students about the academic advantages offered by ALLEN and also imparted techniques for tackling physics-related mathematical problems. The students were highly engaged and actively involved in this enriching session.

Description:

Students of Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus participated in ‘Dhai Akhar’, a national level letter writing competition, which was organized by the India Post, Ministry of Communication and Technology. The theme was ‘Digital India for New India’. The event was held within the school campus on Friday, 22 September 2023. The aim of this event was to inculcate the practice of writing letters among the students in order to retain the importance of inland letters.

35 students from classes 8,9 and 10 enthusiastically participated in this event. Pupils wrote formal letters on the aforementioned theme, addressed to the Chief Postmaster General.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organized Science Workshop on Monday, 18 September, 2023 for the students of classes 9-12. This workshop was part of a series of events organized by the Central Board of Secondary Education in honour of Cleanliness Fortnight, also known as “Swachhata Pakhwada”.

The main objective of this workshop was to assess the purity of the drinking water provided to the students on the school premises. Under the guidance of their science teachers and with the assistance of two volunteering students from the Chemistry Department of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, the students conducted two experiments.

One experiment involved a chemical analysis to determine the biochemical oxygen demand of the water sample. The second experiment involved microscopic observation to detect the presence of microorganisms. Both experiments yielded the conclusion that the water was completely safe for consumption.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organised a digital quiz on Cleanliness and Hygiene, entitled “Swacchata Pakhwada Quiz”, on Tuesday, 12 September, 2023 for its young students of classes 1 and 2.

This quiz was a part of a series of events organised by the Central Board of Secondary Education to celebrate the Cleanliness Fortnight or “Swachhata Pakhwada”. This fortnight was observed by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, from 1 September 2023 to 15 September 2033.

The questions in the quiz centred around the topics of Health, Hygiene and Water Conservation. The students of class 1 emerged as the winners of this highly interactive quiz.

Students of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research acted as the resource persons for this workshop. They taught the students healthy habits and practices to help prevent diseases like Covid-19. Experiments on static electricity and the “Elephant toothpaste” chemical experiment, are a few demonstrations worth mentioning that were greatly enjoyed by the pre-primary and primary pupils.

Description:

The Eco- Club of Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus organised a Plantation Drive in the school on Friday, 25 August 2023 to commemorate the 3rd Anniversary of NEP-2020 through CBSE- One Child, One Plant Campaign. This initiative was part of an environment awareness programme, proposed by the Central Board of Secondary, to undertake a sensitization campaign for schools and students on the environmental concerns such as energy conservation, wastage of food at social gatherings, hazards of electronic waste, conservation of petroleum products, plastic pollution and so on.

Students of classes 3-12 were actively engaged in this drive under the supervision of their teachers. Each student planted a sapling within the boundary of the school premises. Notably, several of these plants were planted in pots or repurposed plastic bottles, thus effectively putting into practice the principles of 3R: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Description:

A two-day Capacity Building Programme on Health and Wellness was conducted by the Centre of Excellence, Central Board of Secondary Education, Bhubaneshwar at Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus on Friday, 18 August, 2023 and Saturday, 19 August, 2023. This workshop is a flagship programme of the board and has been planned by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

55 facilitators from different CBSE- affiliated schools attended this workshop. There were extensive discussions and hands-on group activities such as, role-play, and poster presentations. The honourable resource person for the programme, Dr. Shankar Prasad Dutta, Principal of Krishnagar Public School, Krishnagar, provided valuable insights to the participants through the workshop.

Description:

On Tuesday, 25 July 2023, students from Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus participated in the Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training and hands-on workshop organized by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Kalyani. The event was part of the celebrations for National CPR Week, which spanned from 24 to 28 July 2023.

During the workshop, the students were sensitized about cardiac arrest- the factors promoting it and the first aid measures required to prevent life loss due to it. They were thoroughly instructed on the correct procedures for administering Basic Life Support to someone experiencing a cardiac arrest.

The doctors from AIIMS, Kalyani explained everything through a well-structured PowerPoint presentation, supplemented by a practical, hour-long hands-on session. The students were guided through essential steps such as checking for a pulse, and monitoring breathing. Detailed guidance was also provided on performing CPR and chest compressions, along with other crucial protocols.

Accompanying the students were their class teacher, Mrs. Srimoyee Bandyapadhyay, and their Biology teacher, Mrs. Srabanti Maji Mandal. The event aimed to equip the students with life-saving skills and raise awareness about the significance of CPR in emergency situations.

On Saturday, 22 July 2023, Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus hosted a Capacity Building Programme on Stress Management. The event was organized by the Central Board of Secondary Education, Centre of Excellence, Bhubaneshwar, and saw the participation of 54 teachers from both Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus and other CBSE affiliated schools.

Mrs. Kakali Bagchi, the Vice-Principal of Hariyana Vidya Mandir, Kolkata, and Mr. Debasish Goswami, the Senior Coordinator at Satish Chandra Memorial School, West Bengal, were the esteemed resource persons for the day.

The primary focus of the workshop was to delve into the physical and psycho-social factors that lead to increased stress, along with its effects on individuals. Participants were given the opportunity to explore effective strategies for managing stress in their personal and professional lives.

Description:

On Thursday, 20 July, 2023, Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus students participated in a “One-day Science Camp” organized by the ‘International Genetically Engineered Machine’ (iGEM) team of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata. The workshop catered to two distinct groups: classes V-VIII and classes IX-XII.

For the students in classes V-VIII, the workshop focused on educating them about various disciplines in Biology. This was achieved through a combination of a PowerPoint presentation and engaging hands-on experiments.

On the other hand, the students in classes IX-XII were exposed to “Synbio”, and the practical application of engineering principles in biological systems. This knowledge was imparted through PowerPoint presentations that delved into this fascinating intersection of disciplines. Additionally, a science quiz was also arranged, adding an element of fun and competition to the learning experience.

The workshops were conducted by the students of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata, who served as knowledgeable resource persons for the event.

Description:

Students of Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus participated in the C20 999 Challenge from Tuesday, 11 July 2023 to Friday, 21 July 2023. This challenge was an Integrated Holistic Health Awareness initiative by the Civil 20 (C20) engagement group of the G20.

The challenge involved performing 9 rounds of Surya Namaskar, meditating for 9 minutes, and practising yoga and meditation for 9 consecutive days. Under the guidance of their teachers, Mr. Tarun Kumar Sarkar, Ms Ekata Chakraborty, and Ms Arundhati Basu, the students successfully completed the challenge through their active participation.

Completing this challenge had a positive impact on the students, boosting their individual confidence and strengthening their interpersonal bonds. Moreover, it helped cultivate the habit of incorporating yoga and meditation into their daily lives.

The programme began with an enlightening speech on the significance of International Yoga Day. Students of class 6 demonstrated their mastery over various yoga asanas including Surya namaskar, Vrikshasana, Chakrasana, and Parvatasana, and the rest of the students followed their lead.

A special yoga session was also organised later in the day as part of Janbhagidari. Parents of the students and faculty members of the school participated in this session.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus actively participated in a state-level conference organized by the Kolkata Landsowne Sahodaya Social Welfare Society on Thursday, 15 June, 2023. The conference took place at Abhinav Bharti School in Kolkata and focused on the important themes of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) in relation to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, within the context of the Group of 20 (G-20).

The event was held under the guidance of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) regional office in Bhubaneswar.The esteemed guests included Mr. K. Srinivasan, the regional officer of CBSE Bhubaneswar who graced the occasion as the chief guest. Ms. Chinmoyee Pattanayak, the Joint Director for the School Education department in Kolkata, and Ms. Chhanda Ray, the Director of the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) in West Bengal, attended as the guests of honour.

Representing Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus at the conference were Ms. Ratna Biswas, the Principal, and Ms. Ekata Chakraborty. They actively participated in the discussions and shared their insights on behalf of the school.

Description:

Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus actively participated in a District-level workshop at Kendriya Vidyalaya Border Security Force, Krishnanagar, on Tuesday, 13 June, 2023. The event focused on raising awareness about India’s G20 Presidency, specifically emphasizing Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN).

Distinguished individuals such as Sri A.K. Singh, Deputy Commander BSF, Sri Sudip Mondal, Principal of K.V. Krishnanagar, and Smt. Seema Chakraborty, PRT at KVS, Ishapore, graced the event with their presence. Representing GHSIKC were Mr. Debarpan Chattopadhyay, Ms. Ekata Chakraborty, and Ms. Ankita Jana Kar.

The workshop delved into various aspects of FLN, including Conducive Learning, VARK models of Learning, and other Learner Centric Models. Furthermore, Dr. S.P. Dutta, Principal of Krishnanagar Public School, provided insights into the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and its five pillars: Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability, and Accountability. The participants engaged in discussions exploring the multifaceted nature of NEP and its impact.

Description:

A two-day Capacity Building Workshop on Inclusive Education was conducted by the Centre of Excellence, Central Board of Secondary Education, Bhubaneshwar at Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus on Friday, 9 June, 2023 and Saturday, 10 June, 2023.

41 teachers from different CBSE- affiliated schools attended this workshop. They engaged in extensive discussions and hands-on group activities such as, role-play, games, and poster presentations. The honourable resource persons for the programme, Mrs Rekha Goswami, Headmistress of Krishnagar Public School, Krishnagar, and Mr Debasish Goswami, Senior Teachers’ Coordinator at Satish Chandra Memorial School, Chakdah, provided valuable insights to the participants throughout the workshop.

Description:

EDUKONKLAVO and Satikanta Guha Centre for Culture & Learning (SKGCCL) collaborated with Garden High School IISER Kolkata Campus to organize a career guidance program. Its aim was to equip students of classes 9-12 with valuable insights into contemporary career opportunities, empowering them for their future endeavours. Distinguished panellists engaged in discussions on diverse career paths, focusing on both multidisciplinary and skill-based options. The program was divided into three sections, covering alternative career avenues in Commerce, Humanities, and Science. Students from various other schools, representing different educational boards, actively participated in this interactive session.
